Varcolac renvoie aux vrykolakas (parfois transcrit "Broucolaque" en français). Dans les Balkans et pays slaves, les vrykolakas sont des revenants à l'image des zombies. Au Moyen-âge, les Byzantins pensaient par exemple que les morts enterrés sans cérémonie se transformaient en vrykolakas. Ces créatures folkloriques sont souvent assimilées aux vampires.
