Pete seeger a écrit cette chanson en 1949, dont les paroles jugées subversives ne permettront pas qu'elle soit enregistrée avant 1956, et ne sera vraiment popularisée qu'en 1962.
Le marteau symbolise le travail
La cloche symbolise à la fois les cloches utilisées dans les plantations lors des journées de travail des esclaves et également une référence biblique
La chanson est simplement un hymne qui invite à se rassembler
Peter Seeger explique que ce marteau, cette cloche et cette chanson, il les a déjà, et qu’il suffit de les saisir pour lutter pour la justice, la liberté et l’amour.
