La chanson a été inspirée par une rencontre
Vance: "Around the time I wrote the song I met this girl. I asked her what she did and she was like 'I'm a magician's assistant.' I didn't really know where to go from there. I bet she never gets tired of laying that line on people."
"À peu près au moment où j'ai écrit la chanson, j'ai rencontré cette fille. Je lui ai demandé ce qu'elle faisait et elle m'a dit:" Je suis l'assistante d'un magicien ". Je ne savais pas vraiment où aller à partir de là. Je parie qu'elle ne se lasse jamais de dire cette phrase aux gens. "

Le titre: "I think at first you write these words without really thinking if they make sense or not. In my mind it’s the ocean, but my whole awareness of that word existing is staying at a motel called Riptide. That’s why it was in my head since it’s not the most commonly used expression. And for that reason, the word has a special significance and a special memory for me."
"Je pense d’abord que vous écrivez ces mots sans vraiment vous demander s’ils ont un sens ou non. Dans mon esprit, c’est l’océan, mais je suis tout à fait conscient de l’existence de ce mot dans un motel appelé Riptide. C’est la raison pour laquelle c’était dans ma tête car ce n’était pas l’expression la plus utilisée. Et pour cette raison, le mot a une signification particulière et une mémoire spéciale pour moi."
