Avant de faire appel à Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus espérait enregistrer un duo avec Gwen Stefani ou Nicki Minaj.
Inspiré par une chanson hip-hop des années 1980, le titre ne fait pas référence comme on pourrait le penser aux messages écrits que l’on s’envoie par téléphone mais à l’expression "Strutting My Stuff", qui signifie "Montrer ce que j’ai dans le ventre". Quant à l'expression "Bangerz", elle désigne quelque chose qui rayonne sur les autres et qui rapporte à la chanteuse.
