Pour les paroles, Marianne aurait été inspirée par Ulrike Meinhof, cofondatrice du groupe terroriste Baader-Meinhof Gang. L'idée lui serait venue après avoir regardé un documentaire sur le groupe ainsi que par son sous-titre "broken English... spoken (English "anglais sommaire... anglais parlé).
