"Edge of Seventeen" est le troisième extrait du premier album solo de Stevie Nicks, "Bella Donna"

Originally Nicks was inspired to write a song titled “Edge Of Seventeen” after meeting Tom Petty’s wife, who told Nicks she’d met Petty at the ‘age of seventeen’ – but her southern accent was so thick, it sounded like ‘edge of seventeen’. However, after the death of her uncle Jonathan and the murder of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980, she wrote about her grief resulting from these tragedies, but decided to keep the song title.
The chorus was inspired by something Nicks read while on a flight in 1980:
I was handed a menu that said, ‘The white wing dove sings a song sounds like she’s singing ooh, ooh, ooh.'
Au début, Nicks était inspirée pour écrire une chanson s'intitulant "Aube des dix-sept ans" après avoir rencontré la femme de Tom Petty, qui racontait à Nicks qu'elle avait rencontré Tom Petty à "l'âge de dix-sept ans", mais son accent du sud était si prononcé qu'elle semblait dire "edge". Cependant, après la mort de son oncle Jonathan et le meurtre de John Lennon pendant la même semaine de décembre 1980, elle écrivit à propos de son deuil résultant de ces tragédies, mais décida de garder le même titre.
Le refrain est inspiré de ce qu'a lu Nicks durant une vol en 1980 :
